3 Ways to Make Space for Creativity

As creators, we often hear about “finding time” to write, paint, build, or dream. But sometimes, what we really need isn’t more time—it’s more space.
Mental space. Physical space. Even digital space.

In this week’s episode of The Truth About Storytelling, I dive into simplifying the creative life—clearing out unnecessary subscriptions, organizing your creative workspace, and giving yourself room to actually create.

And I thought I would add a bit more on my blog and in my newsletter, so here are a few more ideas for simplifying our creative lives so we can have more freedom.

💡 1. Create a “Subscription Sandbox”

Instead of canceling everything at once (which can feel overwhelming), try this:

  • Pick 3 digital tools or subscriptions you’re not actively using.
  • Move them to a “sandbox” folder in your bookmarks or notes app.
  • Pause the billing or set a calendar reminder to re-evaluate in 30 days.

If you don’t open that folder again in a month, that’s your answer—it’s safe to let them go.

Creative clarity often starts with subtracting, not adding.

🪑 2. Choose a Desk Persona

Instead of just “cleaning your desk,” try giving your workspace a creative identity.

Ask yourself:

  • If my desk were a character in my story, who would it be?
  • Would it be a battle-worn writing warrior? A serene scribe? A quirky inventor?

Then remove one item that doesn’t belong—and add one that does.
This playful shift can help you reconnect with your creative self in your space, rather than turning cleaning into a chore.

Your desk is a reflection of your mind. Curate it like you would a character.

⏳ 3. Adopt the “10-Minute Unmess”

Big organization sessions can be exhausting. Instead, try this:

  • Set a timer for 10 minutes.
  • Choose either your desk or your inbox.
  • Clear out only what you can in that time—no pressure.

This small win builds momentum. And the more you practice micro-decluttering, the easier it is to protect your creative zone.

You don’t need perfection. You need progress—and space to think.

🚀 Final Thought:

Making space isn’t about getting everything “just right.”
It’s about freeing yourself from the noise, so your stories have room to grow.
