Foreshadowing, Storytelling, and the Journey Toward Launch

There’s something I’ve been thinking about lately as I’ve been revisiting Dark Blade Forged—especially while reading Chapters 24 and 25 for this week’s podcast episode.

It’s the idea of foreshadowing.

We often think of foreshadowing as a purely technical tool in writing, something we use to hint at what’s coming, to prepare the reader, to create tension or anticipation. And yes, it is all of those things.

But it’s also something more.

Foreshadowing is a kind of promise.

It tells the reader:

This matters.
This will come back.
Pay attention.

And in many ways, it’s an act of trust between the storyteller and the reader.

Foreshadowing in Dark Blade Forged

In Chapters 24 and 25, there are moments that carry more weight than they first appear to.

Conversations that seem simple.
Choices that feel small.
Details that might be easy to pass over.

But they’re not accidental.

They’re threads.

Threads that lead forward into the rest of the trilogy, into deeper conflicts, harder questions, and ultimately into the journey of redemption that defines the heart of the story.

As a writer, I love planting those threads.

As a reader, I love discovering them later.

And as I’ve been revisiting this story, I’ve been reminded how much of storytelling is about preparing the way for what’s to come.

Foreshadowing Beyond the Page

Interestingly, I’ve realized that this same idea applies outside of fiction too.

Especially right now.

Because over the past few months—since October, really, I’ve been preparing to launch a Kickstarter for The Dark Blade Trilogy on March 3rd.

And in a way… this season has been full of its own kind of foreshadowing.

Small steps taken behind the scenes.
Covers redesigned.
Manuscripts revised.
Ideas slowly coming into focus.

None of it loud.
None of it immediate.

But all of it building toward something.

Preparing the Way

In storytelling, foreshadowing only works if there’s follow-through.

The promise has to be fulfilled.

And that’s how I’ve been approaching this Kickstarter—not as a sudden launch, but as the next step in a longer journey.

  • The first book has been written and revised, and I’ve continued refining it with additional content.
  • The second book is drafted and undergoing editing, with detailed notes shaping its next version.
  • The third book is in progress, with a substantial draft already in place.

This isn’t the beginning of the story.

It’s the continuation of it.

And the Kickstarter is simply a way to bring the full trilogy together—more complete, more cohesive, and more fully realized.

Why This Matters

At its core, The Dark Blade Trilogy is about:

  • The weight of power
  • The struggle to define justice
  • The pull between darkness and light
  • And the possibility of redemption through faith

Those themes don’t just appear all at once.

They’re introduced, hinted at, wrestled with, long before they reach their full expression.

They are, in many ways, foreshadowed.

Looking Ahead

The Kickstarter launches on March 3rd, and I’ll be sharing more details in the coming days.

There will be hardcover, paperback, and ebook editions, along with a few extras for those who want to be part of the journey.

If you’d like to follow along or be notified when it goes live, I’ll include the link here:

A Final Thought

Foreshadowing is about more than hinting at what’s next.

It’s about recognizing that the story is already in motion, even when we can’t yet see where it’s leading.

And right now, that’s where I find myself.

In the middle of the story.
With threads already laid.
And something more still to come.

Thank you for being part of that journey.
